Mahalia Jackson

On October 26, 1911, Mahalia Jackson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mahalia was a singer, activist, and actress. With a wide vocal range, Mahalia started in music at a young age when she sang in the church choir. She rose to fame in the Chicago music scene before gaining national recognition. Mahalia was an active supporter of the civil rights movement. She had a close relationship with Dr. King and was present during the "I Have A Dream" speech. At one point even said, “Tell ‘em about the dream, Martin, tell ‘em about the dream!” Mahalia recorded several gospel albums and won three Grammy awards for her music.
